This instrument is a descriptive compilation of family psychiatric history adapted from existing measures. It is not a clinical or diagnostic tool. Publications should describe it as a combination of items from the FHAM and All of Us Personal and Family Health History instruments (see details below).
Instrument Details🔗
The HBCD FAM MH collects self-reported psychiatric diagnoses and mental health conditions for the participant's biological mother, biological father, and biological maternal and paternal grandparents. The instrument was developed by combining and adapting items from the following sources:

For the HBCD study, the FAM MH excludes FHAM items related to Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASP) and Undifferentiated Psychiatric Disorder (UPD), as well as items addressing treatment for mental or emotional problems, hospitalization, and suicide.
Additionally, the original response options (e.g., parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, cousins) were limited to biological mother and father and grandparents (biological maternal and paternal).
Finally, the HBCD instrument excludes questions on age at diagnosis, treatment, and medications.
